Paraprofessional Degree Program will Address Oklahoma’s Teacher Shortage
Oklahoma faces a shortage of more than 1,000 teachers, according to the Oklahoma State School Boards Association. To help bridge this gap, Fuel OKC has launched the Paraprofessional Degree Program, providing a pathway to earn a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with an education emphasis through Oklahoma Christian University, preparing them for teacher certification.
A paraprofessional is a school employee who assists both students and teachers under the supervision of a licensed educator. Their support is essential for student success and classroom reinforcement.
“The paraprofessionals already in classrooms are passionate and mission driven to help kids succeed,” Bushey said. “We are excited to create a clear pathway, in partnership with Oklahoma Christian, to help them earn a degree so they can teach independently and ultimately, increase their earning potential.”
Launched on Feb. 14, Fuel OKC’s Paraprofessional Degree Program already has 23 applicants. Upon successful completion of this degree, participants will be qualified to lead their own classrooms. With five enrollment dates each year, Oklahoma Christian University ensures flexibility for aspiring teachers.
