Dove Science Academy High School: A Launchpad for Student Success
At Dove Science Academy High School in Oklahoma City, the Drone Club is more than just a hobby; it's a launchpad for future STEM leaders.
Thriving on teamwork and innovation, students dedicate hundreds of hours to perfecting their piloting skills, programming autonomous flights and navigating intricate obstacle courses – all leading to the regional championship competition, where the school took home the top award for two years in a row and is aiming for a three-peat this spring.
Beyond trophies, the drone program cultivates valuable skills. The competitive environment mirrors real-world challenges, demanding critical thinking, communication and resilience.
"Joining the drone team was a turning point for me,” Dove Science Academy high school senior and drone pilot Jeremiah said. “It pushed me to collaborate with students outside my usual circle and develop skills like teamwork, leadership, accountability and communication. It's definitely boosted my self-confidence."
While the club is mainly student-led, Dove Science Academy teacher and drone team coach Mr. Guvanch is there to advise the students. He says the hands-on learning experience has sparked new interests and opened doors for students.
Drone team manager and pilot Angelique says the club ignited her passion for engineering and leadership. “Prior to joining, I hadn't experienced a role like this, and I've discovered it's incredibly rewarding,” she said. “Now, I'm determined to pursue a career in management and leadership within the field of mechanical engineering."
Angelique, a first-generation college student who will graduate in May 2025, is eyeing prestigious universities like Rice University and MIT, her confidence bolstered by her achievements in the drone club. She was recently selected as one of 95 students nationwide for a college 'fly-in' program at Rice and is also participating in the six-month MIT Semester Program, a rigorous STEM and college prep experience.
These individual successes exemplify Dove Science Academy’s commitment to academic excellence for all students. This free, public charter school serves a diverse student body with 93% minority enrollment, predominantly Hispanic. While 83% of its students come from low-income families, the school stands out as one of only three within Oklahoma City Public School boundaries to earn an 'A' on the State Report Card — demonstrating that academic excellence is attainable within underserved communities.
"At Dove Schools, we believe every student deserves a high-quality education tailored to their unique needs and aspirations,” District STEM Coordinator Kafiye Atay said. “By integrating STEM, character education and college preparation, as well as employing innovative methods like project-based learning and technology, we ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.”
